These are some of the October, November, and December 2024 resources I’ve shared in my weekly emails. There are a few not shared here because they are exclusive to subscribers. I have repeated a couple of them in two categories because there is crossover.
Suicide Resources:
- Brave Talk Training for Young People– I love this! This is an anime-style training that you can use one-on-one, or in groups with young people (e.g., in classrooms), to help them learn how to respond to a struggling friend. From Maybelline and the JED Foundation.

- Insidious Intervention: Criminalized Instead of Care by Jenn J. She was a woman who asked for help and ended up facing assault charges when she never touched or threatened anyone.
- Helping Teens with Suicidal Thoughts Make a Safety Plan– Safety Plan post on SpeakingofSuicide.com from Kimberly O’Brien. This offers more detail on the safety plan for young people.

- Transitions are moments of great stress and heightened risk for suicide for students. That includes the mini transition of holidays, spring break, graduation, and back to school. Here’s what you need to know.

Addiction/Substance Use Disorder/Substance Misuse
- A Popular Addiction Recovery App– NoMo– A young man was showing how it counts the days in recovery and offers tips

- Activator Game for SUD (addiction) and Suicide– Cut apart and fold the squares and put them in a bag or just ask the questions. Answer key plus the research study source credit and URL.
- Is Internet Addiction Real? Child Mind Institute
- CRAFT Connection Prevention Group, Parents and Caregivers CRAFT Skill building support group for Caregivers of Youth 10-14. There are other programs for other ages, too. CRAFT, Community Reinforcement, and Family Training help create an environment that inspires change for your loves ones who are misusing substances. CRAFT-trained family members are successful at getting their addicted loved ones into treatment 70% of the time. Questions? Message the leaders. (Website)
- What is “the bridge” for opioid addiction?–Drug-free opioid withdrawal device that lessens suffering. I would not share this if I had not heard good things. Less expensive and more effective.
- Medical, Recreational Marijuana Legalization Associated With Higher Rates of Youth Suicide, Study Shows– It’s not a chill drug!

- Also, take a look at CRAFT resources for new ways to communicate and support with love
- Universities with collegiate recovery programs. Important if you or a young adult who has struggled with substance misuse or addiction
- Sample conversation between a parent and a child who is misusing drugs and alcohol (in this case marijuana) focused on the goal of asking about suicide. This is a script on how to ask about suicide since the risk of suicide is 10x or greater for those using drugs and alcohol.

- Live On Utah Playbook for the Military: A good playbook with succinct lessons for anyone in any state. Whether you’re a fellow veteran, an active service member, or someone who wants to help. Each lesson takes 1 0 minutes or less.

- Case Study of a 7-Year-Old– Shawn is a kid who was 7 when his mom came to me and talked about his self-hatred. Was it an issue? The pediatrician said, “he’ll grow out of it.” She wasn’t sure. And I wasn’t either. This is a sign and early intervention works.
- What is Sextortion and why are teens susceptible? The FBI has seen a huge increase in cases involving children/teens being threatened and coerced into sending explicit images online.
- How to Have a Mental Health Conversation Handout with a white background in pdf in case you want to print it and share it at a school or in a meeting at work. (Here it is in all its saturated color.)
- The Surgeon General just released an in-depth report about the Mental Health and Well-Being of Parents and Caregivers
- Example of a Resource Handout for Patients (good for school counselors, LCSWs, and employees) This won’t be word for word what you’d use in your area but there are some copy-and-paste resources in there.

- Find an International Survivor of Suicide Loss Day in Your Area. This is a day to come together and remember your loved ones with others who have lost someone to suicide.
- RAIN for Grief short video (I first heard this acronym from Karla Helbert PC)
- Worksheet on going back to work after the loss of a child– For HR and parents to think through and set expectations of what you want to talk about, not talk about, and where.
