These are some of the July, August, and September 2024 resources I’ve shared in my weekly emails. There are a few not shared here because they are exclusive to subscribers. I have repeated a couple of them in two categories because there is crossover.

Suicide Resources:
- Website/Online Chat/Phone/Text-988– 988Lifeline for USA. This is a crisis line. You can call or text about yourself. You can call because you don’t know what to do about a loved one in crisis. Or you can call with someone in crisis on speaker phone to figure out the next steps.
- Video/Documentary: After Your Child’s Suicide Attempt

- Text: 741-741 Crisis Text Line, USA & Canada. Find out more here.
- Website: Live On Utah is a successful suicide prevention program in Utah. See the Suicide Prevention Playbook Online Course.
- Download a sample conversation between a parent and a child who is misusing drugs and alcohol (in this case marijuana) focused on the goal of asking about suicide. This is a script on how to ask about suicide since the risk of suicide is 10x or greater for those using drugs and alcohol.
- Article: “My Young Son Had Suicidal Thoughts. Here’s What I Wish I’d Known” by Katherine Goller, Virginia Executive Director at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)
- Website: Brave Talk Training for young people Includes anime conversations about difficult topics including suicide. Young people can learn which response is the best and what to say to a friend. Maybelline in partnership with the JED foundation
- Website Resource: CAMS Care Counselor Finder– For professional counselors. (e.g., LCSW and LPC) This is a treatment protocol that has shown evidence of helping those who live with suicidal thoughts. You can find a certified mental health professional in your area.

- On Stacey Freedenthal LCSW PhD’s website: What to do After Your Child Attempts Suicide
- Website: Virtual Suicide Prevention Conference for Mental Health Professionals is August 24 & 25. Free version and I usually pay the $10 fee so I can get the on-demand videos and handouts. (This is over but it happens annually.)
- Book (pdf): For those responsible for suicide prevention policy this is a free book download co-written by two top suicidologists and friends, Lisa Horowitz PhD and John Ackerman PhD. It is written with short chapters so you can focus on the chapters you need.

- Website: R;pple– Turning harmful internet searches into messages of hope
- Website: Find an AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk in your area– Walk and raise money in memory of your loved one.
- Phone Support: CopLine for USA: 1-800-267-5463. COPLINE® provides active listening through a hotline by maintaining complete confidentiality as well as anonymity if the caller chooses. Calls are answered by trained retired officers to engage w/ callers on the daily stressors that officers and their family members experience.
- UK Website: The Jordan Legacy in the UK posted our “After a Child’s Suicide Attempt” documentary but alongside that video the nonprofit posted resources relevant to the UK
Addiction/Substance Use Disorder/Substance Misuse
- Article: What is “The Bridge” for opioid addiction?–Drug-free opioid withdrawal device that lessens suffering. I would not share this if I had not heard good things. Less expensive and effective.
- Website: CRAFT Connection Prevention Group, Parents and Caregivers CRAFT Skill building support group for Caregivers of Youth 10-14. There are other programs for other ages, too. CRAFT, Community Reinforcement, and Family Training helps create an environment that inspires change for your loved ones who are misusing substances. CRAFT-trained family members are successful at getting their addicted loved ones into treatment 70% of the time. Questions? Message the leaders. (Website)
- Website: Foundation for Change. Learn communication skills based on Jeffrey Foote’s book, Beyond Addiction. This is helpful for families grappling with a loved one who has SUD– podcast, family events, and instructor training opportunities.
- PDF: Helping. My favorite one-page handout from Families Anonymous.. My favorite quote from that document that became my religion–> “Projecting an image of the future— and anxiously hovering over it for fear that it will or it won’t come true—uses all my energy and leaves me unable to live today. Yet living today is the only way to have a life.”
- Website: Camp Mariposa is a year-round addiction prevention and mentoring program for youth affected by the substance use of a family member. Here are the locations. Camp Mariposa is offered free of charge to all families. So if you do not have someone who will go, please donate!
- Book: Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli, and the smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine. As such we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption.
- Website: Universities with collegiate recovery programs. Important if you or a young adult who has struggled with substance misuse or addiction

- Press Release: The Surgeon General just released an in-depth report about the Mental Health and Well-Being of Parents and Caregivers
- Article: How Parents Can Support Their College Students’ Mental Health– NAMI National
- Phone Resource: Warmline.org for USA. This isn’t a crisis line but every state has a warmline. You can call if you feel lonely and want to connect. You can call if you feel frustrated by a mental health issue and more.
- Website: Be Present Ohio: The Online Experience (BPO:XP) To see if you can implement this in your state, click the schedule button. Thank you John Ackerman PhD from Nationwide Children’s Hospital for this resource.
- PDF: Example of a Resource Handout for Patients (good for school counselors, LCSWs, and employees) This won’t be word for word what you’d use in your area but there are some copy-and-paste resources in there.
- PDF: Worried about a young child’s self-esteem issues? It is a risk factor for later mental health issues and even suicide. But early intervention works! See this case study. (PDF)

- PDF: Grief Resources for Parents & Schools– This is a list of resources if you have a grieving teen, need to tell a member of your family about a suicide, etc. (PDF)
- Article: How to use DBT skills to manage the pain of grief
- Website: Comfort Zone Camp is a free camp for children grieving the loss of a loved one such as a sibling or parent. If you are looking for a way to give back they always need someone to sponsor a child, dedicate a weekend to be a camp counselor. There are camps specific to overdose loss and suicide loss. There is even a virtual support group. See the calendar here.

AnneMoss does this work in memory of her son, Charles, who struggled with anxiety, depression, and addiction, and died by suicide at age 20 in 2015.
