Coping Strategies for Grief & Loss: A Workshop for Long-Term Survivors of Suicide Loss
Facilitated by a mother who lost her son, Charles, to suicide in 2015, this session explores what long-term healing really looks like from different perspectives. It will touch on how to manage grief flare-ups during life milestones, recurring coulda woulda shouldas, how to continue building the emotional muscle to carry the loss without being defined or consumed by it, and how to find meaningful ways to remember your loved one. We’ll also talk about how to handle maddening and uncomfortable moments when others say you should have “moved on by now,” or accuse you of “holding onto your grief.” This is a safe space for honesty, validation, and gentle forward movement—because grief doesn’t end, but with support, it can evolve.
In this workshop, participants will:
- Discover coping strategies to help ease recurring grief
- Understand what’s “normal” in long-term suicide loss
- Explore how others have honored their loved ones’ memories in personal and healing ways
- Learn to reframe and respond to insensitive or minimizing comments
- Develop tools for self-forgiveness and navigating the painful coulda, woulda, shouldas
- Discuss that feeling suicidal after a loss by suicide is normal
- Play games, get to know one another
- Life milestones grandchildren. Family components, don’t talk about it, learn from your family
- Compassion fatigue
