This is a Q&A interview with Jennifer Bitton, assistant principal of Lehi High School In Utah who helped bring the first student wellness center to support the emotional and mental health needs of students to the Alpine School District in Utah. The wellness center provides a safe space for students to decompress and share their emotions. By nourishing them physically, emotionally, and socially, students perform better, are absent less, and more apt to achieve their potential. We’ll start with Jennifer’s story about why she started one in the first place. Then we’ll find out how does it work? Where do you start? How did you get buy-in? What have been the results so far? How do you manage behavior and keep things in check? How does it get funded? How can I still meet the mental health needs of students if I don’t have the space or funds right now to pursue a center? —–About Jennifer Bitton, Assistant Principal Jennifer Bitton is a graduate of BYU and has been an educator for 30 years starting as a PE and Health teacher who later became an administrator. She travels around the USA speaking at national conferences about how wellness centers are a critical part of building the life skills students need for emotional wellness, and success, and serve as a foundation for managing life’s challenges.
