Those who register may access the recording afterward.  This event is free of charge, but registration is required.

Hosted by AnneMoss Rogers and Mental Health Awareness Education, this webinar will feature a presentation by NIMH scientist Lisa M. Horowitz, Ph.D., M.P.H., a lead developer and principal investigator of the validated 20-second ASQ Suicide Screening Tool, a brief, validated tool designed to identify suicide risk in both youth and adults. For those 10 and up, although you can use it for younger children.

For years, Dr. Lisa Horowitz and I (AnneMoss) co-presented on this Suicide Screening tool. I’d tell my story of a son who visited three medical settings two weeks before his death by suicide and was never screened.

At one of those visits, he was taken to the medical setting by the house manager of the recovery house (that was their protocol) specifically for a suicide risk screen after relapsing on heroin and before being checked back into detox.

They turned him down, telling the house manager, “We don’t take ‘those people’ anymore,” referring to those with SUD (substance use disorder or addiction). That made my son feel like human garbage. He wanted to tell. And these were all missed opportunities. That’s why I believe so strongly in this tool being used in clinical settings. Every medical setting should be screening for suicide risk. This event is in memory of my son, Charles, a decade after his death by suicide.

See the ASQ ToolKit Page on NIMH and download the tool and the protocols.

Bio for Lisa M. Horowitz, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Horowitz was instrumental in inviting me to speak at NIMH in 2018, the first non-clinician asked to speak on suicide at an NIMH workshop.

Dr. Horowitz is a Pediatric Psychologist and a Senior Associate Scientist at NIMH. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from George Washington University, completed a Pediatric Health Service Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School, and obtained a Master in Public Health (MPH) at the Harvard School of Public Health. The major focus of Dr. Horowitz’s research has been in the area of suicide prevention in the medical setting, and is also one of the co-authors of the “Blueprint for Youth Suicide Prevention,” released by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
